Metallurgical Test work conducted on Silver Heap Leach Tailings

Metallurgy Summary

ALS Metallurgy was commissioned by to conduct metallurgical testwork on three silver heap leach tailings samples. The samples had been pulverised, and were submitted for bottle-roll cyanide leach tests, in order to determine the cyanide-soluble silver content.

The addition of lead nitrate appears to have little impact on silver extraction, whether it be added to a direct cyanide leach or CIL test. Final leach residue Ag grade is lower under CIL conditions for all samples, indicating improved extraction. This is not necessarily reflected in the reported extraction numbers, due to the CIL tests returning lower calculated head grades than the direct leach tests.
There is no relationship between Ag head grade and Ag extraction.

Reagent consumption for Heap 4 – Toe 1 is significantly higher than Heap 1-2C, which in turn was significantly higher than Heap 2-6B. This indicates the three samples have different chemical/mineralogical composition. Comprehensive assays and/or mineralogical analysis is recommended in order to understand the different mineral types in each sample. This may also be useful in determining the reason(s) for lower silver extractions observed.

For the Heap 4 – Toe 1 sample, Ag extraction during the first 2 hours of leaching was negligible (particularly under direct leach conditions), and almost all of the cyanide is consumed. It is assumed the cyanide is consumed in a side reaction during the early stages of leaching. This side reaction appears to be complete before the 4-hour mark.

Introduction

ALS Metallurgy undertake cyanide leaching testwork on three silver heap leach tailings samples.

Testwork was conducted, and included the following:

The testwork program is presented as a flowsheet in Figure 1.

Testwork results were communicated to the client immediately when available, which enabled the program to progress on a fully informed basis.

The purpose of this report is to describe the testwork program with respect to samples and procedures, and present results together with some commentary and observations.

Samples and Sample Preparation

The samples were received at ALS Metallurgy Balcatta and were packaged in a box containing 4 x plastic bags. The contents of the bags are summarised in the following table.
Bag NumberSample IDSample DescriptionApproximate Mass (g)
1Heap 1-2CPulverised Residue1700
2Coarse Residue1900
3Heap 2-6BPulverised Residue3000
4Heap 4 – Toe 1Pulverised Residue2800

The coarse residue for Heap 1-2C was pulverised and combined with the already pulverised material in order to generate sufficient mass for the testwork required.

Each sample (three in total) was then thoroughly homogenised by passing three times through a 12-segment rotary sample divider, then split into 500g charges to be used for leaching testwork.

The client provided the expected silver grades for the samples, which were as follows:

Note: Perth tap water was used for all aspects of the testwork program in which slurry
preparation was required.

Analytical Procedures

All assay samples generated during the course of the testwork program, were submitted for analysis to the ALS Metallurgy assay laboratory in Perth. The following analytical methods were employed:

Cyanide Leach Testwork

Each sample was split into 4 x sub-samples and submitted for cyanide leach testwork.

The main objectives of the cyanide leach testwork were:

Test Procedure

  1. The sample was transferred into a 4-litre leach bottle with screw-on lid.
  2. Water was added to generate a 40% solids (w/w) slurry.
  3. Sufficient hydrated lime (60% CaO) was added to establish a pH of approximately 10.5.
  4. Where applicable, solid lead nitrate was added at a dose rate of 200 g/t.
  5. Where applicable, activated carbon was added at a concentration of 30 g/L of slurry.
  6. Solid sodium cyanide was added to establish an initial nominal cyanide solution strength of 0.10% (w/v).
  7. The slurry was sparged with oxygen to provide an elevated dissolved oxygen (DO) content.
  8. The bottle was then sealed and placed on bottle-rolling apparatus.
  9. The leach was monitored at regular intervals (2, 4, 6, 8 and 24 hours). Slurry pH, DO and cyanide concentration were monitored and recorded.
  10. Lime and cyanide were added as required to maintain target pH (>9.8) and cyanide concentration (>0.05%). The bottle head-space was sparged with oxygen at each check.
  11. At each check, a 30 mL solution sample was removed and a sub-sample was assayed for silver. The remaining solution was used to determine cyanide concentration via silver nitrate titration.
  12. For CIL tests, a sub-sample of loaded carbon was also removed at each check. The carbon was washed, dried, weighed and submitted for silver assay.
  13. At the termination of the test (48 hours) the terminal pH, oxygen and cyanide levels were determined and a solution sample was assayed for silver.
  14. All remaining carbon was screened out, thoroughly washed, dried, weighed and a sub-sample submitted for silver assay.
  15. The residual slurry was filtered and washed with a dilute cyanide solution, followed by several rinses with DI water. The filter cakes was dried and weighed. A representative sub-sample was assayed for silver.
